kanha said in geeta about the humanbeing----

According to Shri Krishna there are two spirits that leaves in all individual bodies. One is jiva-atma (self) and other is Ishvara (Expansion of God that stays with every individual soul as guide and observer of our action and intentions). In Chapter 13 and Shloka 23 of Bhagavad-Gita it is stated by Shri Krishna:

“Yet in this body there is another, a transcendental enjoyer,
who is the Lord, the supreme proprietor,
who exists as the overseer and permitter, and
who is known as the Supersoul.”
Shri Krishna in Bhagavad-Gita said that whatever one thinks about continuously in their life due to their association with material nature and senses, at time of death the same material nature mood and sense creates desire in consciousness that migrate us to full fill those desires in another body more suitable for that mood. According to Shri Krishna material nature consists of three modes—goodness (sattva), passion (rajas) and ignorance (tamas). When person living in his ordinary life is continuously bombarded with sense impulse and desires spiritual or materialistic, it results in three type of nature in us. Some stimulus creates nature in goodness (higher understand and knowledge with energy), other stimulus create a nature in passion (strong desire to fulfill with strong longing and endure), and other stimulus creates nature of ignorance (delusion, madness, indolence).

The environment and food we eat has great impact on the nature of our consciousness. The nature of this consciousness has direct impact on our intelligence, body, and life style. Thus which ever mode of nature we continuously reinforce in our lifestyle it will become predominate at the time of death because of it continuous association by the jiva-atma. In Bhagavad-Gita it is stated by Shri Krishna:

"And whoever, at the end of his life, quits his body remembering
Me alone at once attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt."
Chapter 8, Shloka 5

"Whateve state of being one remembers when he quits his body,
O son of Kunti, that state he will attain without fail."
Chapter 8, Shloka 6

“When one dies in the mode of goodness,
he attains to the pure higher planets of the great sages”
Chapter 14, Shloka 14

“When one dies in the mode of passion,
he takes birth among those engaged in fruitive activities;
and when one dies in the mode of ignorance,
he takes birth in the animal kingdom.”
Chapter 14, Shloka 15

“The living entities in this conditioned
world are my eternal fragmental parts.
Due to conditioned life,
they are struggling very hard with six sense,
which include the mind.”
Chapter 15, Shloka 7

“The living entity in the material world carries
his different conceptions of life from one body
to another as the air carries aromas. Thus he
takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another.”
Chapter 15, Shloka 8

“The living entity, thus taking another gross body,
obtains a certain type of ear, eye, tongue,
nose and sense of touch,
which are grouped about the mind.
He thus enjoys particular set of sense objects.”
Chapter 15, Shloka 9
As Shri Krishna stated we move from one body to another, as our desire requires. This continuous cycle can only be stopped when realizes his true self and surrender to the Ishvara (Supersoul) that is living in every aspect of this creation and sustaining it including our body.

When our body’s age causes it to decay and we leave this body to take another body (spiritual or material) we take our self in to the next life; however, because we are not self-realized most of our life we spending associating with our false self (ego – false personality). This false personality we call ego is continuously changing even in our currently life as we grow from childhood to youth, youth to adult, and adult to old age, and then to death. Even after death this false personality goes into next life, and continuous to change. In this life we all have experienced something similar where we like something or someone as child but now longer desire as adult because our false self (ego) values and needs are changed. As soon as we take another body, nature around us starts programming us using our new body’s sense and its environmental stimulus that we have to behave certain way, and the games starts again. If we are born again as human some people remember this false personality even in next life, and some forget as time removes it from our individual consciousness. Those that remember this false personality from previous life because of higher self awareness of our true self or strong impact of previous life are able to recall and communicate that to us sometime.

Many researchers have done research on reincarnation and provide many references to this concept. Dr. Ian Stevenson, founder of The Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) at University of Virginia has published a book on this called Twenty Case Suggestive of Reincarnation with ISBN number 9780813908724. There are many others researchers that have done this kind of research on reincarnation, but the verdict from scientific community is still out because it states that we don’t have enough studied subject. Also the subject that have been studied have some (not all) minor inaccuracy in their recalling their previous life environment like house structure, location of certain things, appearance of individual, and other minor details. Also another thing to take in to consideration is that time changes our landscape, people’s look, and even our memories due to the biasness of our desires still left in our consciousness. In the end reincarnation can be experienced by living it or by self realization of higher self and Ishvara (Supersoul).
